Tuesday Group Report
As most people will be aware, Tues night’s group was our original beginners group. Over the course of the first year we averaged about 12 runners per week.
As our original beginners progressed through the second year to distances of 10k and beyond, Tuesday was needed to become abit more tasking, and from this we started to grow.
By February 2015 (our 2nd anniversary) we had attracted over 150 different runners with around 100 of those returning to run at least 3 times. We have now had well over 200 different runners use our Tuesday night run.
I had never imagined it becoming the size it is now. Our main aim was a friendly, welcoming atmosphere that people could use as a way to access running. The success of Carlisle parkrun has obviously contributed massively to the success of our club and shows that the parkrun feeling can be replicated through the week.
We do plan some tough sessions on a Tuesday and only a very small number ever grumble! The grumbles are never about the graft though. It’s normally about how far away from the next toilet we are…………….!
With the club now sitting at over 130 members it’s fair to say that whatever we have been doing over the past 2 ½ years has been going down well with most people.
It has been a real privilege to see people join the club - for motivation, help with training or simply because their friends have – and go on to achieve some really special milestones in their running. Last year’s Club Runner of the Year Matt Begg is a glowing example of how abit of encouragement and structure can go a long way.
We like to think that you are all on board with our ethos that inclusivity and friendliness are our priorities. Yes it’s amazing when we win team prizes or have finishers very high up the standings at races but it is far more important that our club members feel welcome in those races in the first place.
I don’t want to talk too much about individuals as that will give away clues to our annual awards winners, but………..special mentions go to Emma Richardson who this year has run 5k, 10k and ½ marathon PB’s and run her first marathon. Colin Nichol – the secret runner. Colin joined DH Runners after running most weeks at parkrun then taking the plunge on a Tuesday night. On his first run, 4 miles into an 8miler he told me this was his furthest ever run. I asked if he would be ok to get back to Morley Street………………thankfully he was!

THURSDAY GROUP REPORT
The Thurs group began in November 2015. WE weren’t sure how many people to expect so were a little overwhelmed when 47 turned up! Since then we’ve had more than 280 different runners come at least once and we average about 50 runners a week.
The You Can Run 6 week course started in September. It was initially agreed that this would be limited to 15 runners but due to the overwhelming interest we ended up with 35! The course was a great success. A massive thanks to all our runners from Tuesday who came along to help out.
As the group has grown and people have progressed, it became apparent that we needed to scale back a little so as not to intimidate brand new runners. Therefore the mileage now sits at around 5k with a maximum pace of 10min/mile. Of course, people can run/walk as much as they need.
A huge thanks to Andy and Nina for running the group with me, and also to the 21 different volunteers we’ve had over the year.
